Broadband customers may face increased costsBy living in the ‘wrong’ postcode Britons could be paying more for the cost of their broadband services, it has been revealed.

According to uSwitch.com, those consumers living outside an internet supplier’s Local Loop Unbundling (LLU) network are set to incur extra costs than those within such a boundary.

Overall, non-LLU users were reported to be paying up to 240 per cent more for their internet services than those who are within an unbundled area, this in turn could well impact upon consumers’ attempts at debt management and making personal loan repayments.

Head of communication services Steve Weller said: "It’s simply not acceptable that one customer may be paying £19.99 a month for a service of up to 1Mb yet their friends down the road could be paying just £14.99 for a 2Mb service."

Mr Weller added that those living in rural areas are particularly susceptible to these increased costs and are effectively treated as "second class citizens in the eyes of the broadband operators".

Earlier this month, uSwitch.com suggested that changing to competitive utility suppliers could help consumers with debt management and offset the pressure the recent increase to interest rates will placed on secured and home loan repayments.
