Debt problems pricing fans out of footballDebt management difficulties could be pricing out many football fans from supporting their team, new figures indicate.

According to research conducted by Virgin Money, 12 per cent of supporters - about one in eight - will not renew their season ticket due to rising costs which may impact upon their ability to make personal loan repayments.

Spokesperson John Franklin said: "High ticket prices, pricey merchandise and matchday programmes are all contributing to an ordinary fan’s regular costs."

The financial service providers’ Football Fans Price Index revealed the cost of going to football games has risen by 17.8 per cent since January last year.

Expenses such as match tickets, replica football shirts and transport were reported to account for some £91.87, a rise of £13.92 from the £77.95 noted at the beginning of 2006.

Last month, Michael Shirley from Debtmatters claimed an increasing number of personal loan borrowers are in denial about their difficulties in making repayments on their borrowing.
