Mums know best when it comes to loan adviceMums have the most positive influence on Britons’ attitudes to money, a new study reveals.

According to research by Scottish Widows, some one in five consumers view their mothers as a financial "role model", believing that they issue the best advice when it comes to areas such as personal loans and borrowing.

Customer and brand marketing director Mike Hoban said: "We all need positive role models in life so it’s great that our mums are the people we look up to financially - but of course this shouldn’t replace professional advice."

He added that taking a firm control of finances is "crucial" for consumers, especially those wishing to plan for the future.

The study also revealed that 84 per cent of those under the age of 24 follow the positive example set by their family members, friends and colleagues in terms of managing their money.

Research by the Resolution Foundation claimed that the creation of a generic financial advice service could encourage consumers to take a better attitude towards loans and savings.
