AA Warns Of Need To Cover CaravansAs the summer gets into full swing many caravan enthusiasts will be rolling out their vans and cleaning them up in preparation for the touring season ahead.

However, the AA is warning such motorists to be careful about ensuring security is sufficient to prevent losses - particularly in the Midlands. Those with caravans in the region have been subject to a spate of disappearances. Anyone banking on a summer holiday in such a vehicle might find themselves needing to take out a cheap loan at the last minute to fund an alternative break or to purchase a new caravan, should thieves upset their vacation plans.

In response to the disappearances in the “Caravan Bermuda Triangle”, AA Caravan Insurance is urging holidaymakers to ensure they have full and up-to-date insurance to prevent such monetary losses should their van be taken. Simon Douglas, head of AA Caravan Insurance, warns drivers: “Caravanning is increasing in popularity and we’re seeing more caravans being stolen to order, especially larger, luxury twin-axle models. Three-quarters of those stolen disappear without trace and are never recovered.”

Thefts of high-value caravans are being organised by criminal gangs which have identified a number of opportunities to take advantage of motorist vulnerabilities. For instance, thefts often occur when a caravan is waiting to depart, while their owners enjoy a final cup of tea. Additionally, motorway services have been identified as a spot where the costly theft could be effected, while the fact that the caravans are also stolen with increasing regularity from storage sites is testament to the fact that the crimes are organised.

Such theft can put significant increased pressure on household budgets and could affect a consumer’s ability to meet other costs, such as loan repayments, credit cards and mortgage costs. In an attempt to avoid such a situation, a variety of security devices are available. The AA identifies wheel clamps, chassis locks and hitch locks as ways in which to bolster the safety of a mobile home. It observes that a wheel clamp is often the minimum requirement stipulated by insurers when covering such a vehicle. While such devices may not be cheap, their cost can be met with a low rate loan and the burden of repayment spread over a set period. Furthermore, such a loan can help in addressing the expense of the insurance policy itself, allowing drivers to enjoy a holiday with the security of full cover.

The news comes as the cost of motoring becomes an increasingly widely discussed topic. Many news providers have observed that fuel prices are rising steeply in the current climate of economic instability and high oil costs. Over the spring bank holiday, the AA reported that the higher price of petrol would result in costs of 110 million pounds above that normally spent during the period. With many people hoping to go on a break, the rocketing costs of driving could dissuade them. However, it is possible that those worried about their financial circumstances could be able to use the capital supplied by a personal loan to enjoy a well-earned rest.
